Ambulance Trusts, why they exist and their advantages:

The ambulance trusts are trusts that operate in the health sector. They help with efficiency and aid with the normal functioning of the health sector. They provide the services that are non-core to the health services but still health-related. Without them, the health services will not be able to fully function and meet the daily demands and be able to provide a good health service. They are part of the health sector, and they benefit all beneficiaries without exception. They help save lives in emergency and non-emergency situations.

A good example of such trusts in the United Kingdom is the Ambulance Services Trusts, which operate in England and Wales.

The trust:

a). Provides ambulance services to the health sector;

b). They provide the infrastructure required for mobile health services provision;

c). Provide free emergency care services to any individual in the UK, regardless of their immigration status;

d). Rapid response vehicles;

e). Patient transport services;

f). Hazardous area response teams;

g). Air ambulances;

There are currently 11 Ambulance services trusts in England & Wales. In Scotland, we have the Scottish Ambulance Service, and in Northern Ireland, we have the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service Health and Social Care.

Effect of Covid-19 on the ambulance services:

Covid-19 has created increased patient safety and health & safety risks for the Ambulance trusts services. Covid-19 has also resulted in increased safety requirements for all service providers. It has also resulted in changes and updates to the guidelines which might result in increased inconsistencies in their operational requirements. The inconsistencies in the infections and the jurisdictional requirements can also result in a reduction in the efficiency of service provision.

The ambulance services implemented operational changes, strategic changes, digital changes and also updated their long term plans in response to the Covid-19 requirements. These updates could have increased the recovery speeds and emergency provision as a result of changes in the operational environment. These changes also enable consolidated learning and operations due to the need to learn from each other. There is an increased likelihood that these changes might result in a centralised and consolidated approach for the future service provision in comparison to the jurisdictional and localised requirements that currently exist, driven by the need for knowledge sharing, best practice sharing and lessons learned.

There is also an increased risk of reduction in the equity of care efforts as the current recruitment efforts focus on supply-demand factors, availability factors and emergency requirements in comparison to equity requirements.

The overall effect on the trust's market:

The increased demand for the ambulance trusts services, results in increased job creation efforts, increase health & safety requirements and in turn, increased patient safety requirements. These increases are likely to result in the expansion of the trust's market as there might be a need to create more trusts to mitigate the risks and address the safety concerns. There is also an increase to the legal sector as a whole due to the increased regulatory and legal requirements driven by the need to address the safety requirements.
